Sinhala Folk Drama

     Introduction

    Villagers lived in remote areas in Sri Lanka during old years performed some kind of dramas in leisure time. These events made happy gathering and helped to develop knowledge of farming as well as religion especially Buddhism. An example for this is SOKARI NADAGAMA which showed historical stories.

  • SOKARI NADAGAMA was mostly performed in Kamatha. Sometime it was in selected village home. A group comprised of selected villages practices several months before the day performing. Stage was prepared by themselves and ask to all villagers come to see at free of charge. Performing was undertaken in whole night. One petrol match lamp was lightered to remove dark performing area. All the villagers gathered to the place were happy and gives cheers by applauding. Next day, comments on performing are discussing at the small boutique in the village.Some gathered to Devalaya (God place) or to see GAMMADUWA that performed by Kapuwas who are caretakers of god temples.
