The Aralia tree (Plumeria)

The Aralia tree (Plumeria) is known as temple tree in Sri Lanka. This is a beautiful, colorful flowering plant that produces numerous flowers with fragrant scents. Flowers are used by the Buddhist devotees for offering at worship in temples. Aralia flowers bloom at top of the branches of the tree and generally available throughout the year. More people like to grow aralia trees closed to their homes in Sri Lanka.

The Na tree (ironwood)

The Na tree (Ironwood in English) is a national tree in Sri Lanka. It is identified as a sacred plant. This plant gives great value for Sri Lankan people. While the Na flower is white in color it has four or more petals with 5cm wide. Large petals fall off easily. Some people in Sri Lanka collect these flowers to use as herbal raw material. Na tree grows more than 30 feet height. New leaves show bright red in color. Later, leaves turn into dark green when they are in mature.

Arecanut (puwak  )

Arecanut (puwak in Sinhala) is a commercial crop that largely grown in wet zone in Sri Lanka. Several bunches of arecanut are commonly seen in a plant with deferent levels of maturity. Farmers pluck highly matured bunch to sell in the market. Arecanut is used for chew of betel by Sri Lankan people. Some villagers sale dry arecanut known as karunka in higher price. Ripe arecanut is kept under the mud for future use. They are called “Madapuwak” in sinhala. Several parts of the plant are used by peoples at ritual & social events and building shelters.

Cardamom (Karandamungu or Henasal)

Cardamom (Karandamungu or Henasal in Sinhala) is an expensive spice grown in Sri Lanka. This is mainly used in the food industry as a flavoring food in curry or meat dishes,sweets, confectionaries, and bakery products. Dry fruits of cardamom are treaded by the growers in higher price. Cardamom is grown as a crop in hill country of Sri Lanka. It can be seen in Kandy, Matale, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Rathnapura and some parts of the Galle districts.

Heen Narang (Mandarin  )

Heen Narang (Mandarin in English) is a tree belong to citrus family. It has a deep orange fruits with a thin and moderately loose peel. They can be seen in home gardens in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan drink juice of Heen Naran by adding water, salt and Sugar. Some like to add juice of Narang to sambal and curry to make sour flavor.

Thibbatu (Turkey berry  )

Thibbatu (Turkey berry in English) grows in dry areas in sri lanka and some other places. It can be seen in areas undr the chenna cultivation in the country. The Thibbatu contains lot of iron which necessary to human body. It also helps to treat indigestion, stomachaches and diarrhea. The shub of Thibbatu is generally 2 or 3 m in height with thorny stems.

Naminam (Namnam )

Naminam (Namnam in English) is a fruit that are grown in home gardens in Sri Lanka. The fruits have interesting flavour and therefore children like to eat them. usually, fruits are sprung up around the trunk of the tree. They are appeared as clusters. Some health benefits of Naminam are mental relaxation and solving of digestion problems.

Firewood

The Most of the rural women use firewood for the purpose of cooking, boiling water and to protect cold weather in some parts of Sri Lanka. This picture is captured at the tea plantation in up-country of Sri Lanka and shows a woman carrying a bunch of firewood for her daily needs. Apparently, Firewood is used by more people in Sri Lanka as an alternative raw material to generate energy at present.

Kumbuk (arjuna or arjun tree)

Kumbuk (arjuna or arjun tree in English) is a tree commonly seen in Sri Lanka. It is beautiful, tall and grown on river banks or tanks or wells. It is usually grown about 20 to 25 meters in height with leaves 7.5 to 15 cm long and 4 to 7 cm wide. The Kumbuk tree provides shade from hot sun shine in tropical countries. Parts of the kumbuk tree such as barks, leaves, roots are used on preparation of Ayurvedic medicines.

Mussenda (Flag Bush )

Mussenda (Flag Bush in English) is a shrub that is grown at the edges of Rubber or Tea or forest lands or roadsides in Sri Lanka. It is known as “Wel Buthsarana” among villagers. However, the white leaves of the plants are fried in oil and eaten like ‘Papadam’. This common indigenous pant is about 2m tall.

Hathawariya (Satawari)

Hathawariya (Satawari in English) is a herbal plant, grown in Sri Lanka and India. It is well grown in scrub jungles and forests. The plant is a long-growing, branching plant with thorns along the trunk. The roots grow as tubular tubers.

Maduruthala (Tulasi)

This plant is named as Maduruthala or Tulasi in Sri Lanka.Its english name is Holy Basil. This is an herbal plant used in Ayurveda medicine. Some villagers of Sri Lanka burn the leaves of this plant to drive away mosquitoes.
