1. How to Prepare the land for pepper cultivation?
People of Sri Lanka grow pepper as a main crop or as an intercrop under the other cultivation. The first task is to clear the land and then marking places for pits in rows.If the pepper is major crop in the land, the gap in between two rows is to be 8 feetwhile the gapbetween two plants in a row should also be eight feet. If the pepper is cultivated as an inter-crop under coconut plants, the rows should be in the centerin between coconut plant two rows.
2. what is the size of a pit for pepper plants?
The recommended size of a pit is 60 cm X 60 cm X 60 cm for pepper plants.
3. Finding supporters?
Supporter poles is compulsory for the pepper creepers. Gliricidia (Ginisiria) is the most suitable plant for this purpose. 6 and half feet length your arm size ginisiria pole should be planted each of the pit closed to up bounder. Half a foot must also be under the ground to enable them to grow roots. For this purpose, you must use sharp knife to cut the pole to slope shape.
4. Planting?
You need to buy pepper plant to plant in the prepared pits with coconut husks at the bottom and compost mixed with ground surface soils. You can also buy plants in a concessionary rate with assistance of Extension Officer of export agriculture department.
5. Fertilizing?
The following mixture of fertilizer can be applied for plant after 6 months of planting.

Mix all of the above fertilizers together and apply 125 gram per plant. Also, it recommended that leaf of ginisiriya is a good organic fertilizer can be obtained from grown pole supporters.
6. Maintaining plants?
When the pepper plants are elongating, it is needed to tie creepers to poles with soft materials like cloth or banana stem husk. If a pepper plant has been fallen down to ground you may need to roll out the ground part and cover with soil. Then, upper part of the creeper tie to the supporter. You can get some more branches from the plant it will help to give more branches of pepper seeds. Further, it is needed to prune ginisiriya from 10 feet of ground level and to drop them to root of plants.
7. How to protect plants from insects or animals?
In my cultivation, I noticed that only animals attacked to pepper are pigs. Pigs are digging the ground near roots of pepper plants to find some worms under the soil. Therefore, roots of the plants came out of the soil and then the plants were dried. Therefore, more attentions are needed for the cultivations where animals such as pigs are living.
8. How to use pesticides?
It is better to avoid always using chemical pesticides for the cultivation.
9. How to maintain cultivation?
Cultivators should care of the cultivation from the droughts. Advanced dry weather will cause to dry up newly cultivated plants. Therefore, in dry zones, it is recommended to setup suitable irrigational system. As per my experience, my cultivation has been faced to several drought conditions. Several plants were death. Replanting was done. However, I could secure lot of plants by providing water manually. As per long lasting solution for dry weather, setting up irrigation system for the cultivation was fail due to too expensive to affordable.
Next consideration is to clear the land. We need to cut the grass which grown in fast in the land. Normally, three times a year, grass cutting is undertaken.
The branches of ginisiriya are needed to cut and put its leaves closed to roots of the pepper plants as it is good fertilizer.
Further, we always need to monitor the plantation closely to tie up the fallen creeper to ginisiriya pole.
10. How harvesting pepper?
When you are walking around the cultivation you can see some ripe pods in plants. This indicates that the pepper is ready for harvesting. Some pods can be plucked by standing on the ground. However, the pods are too high to reach, you have to use small ladder to pluck them.

Price of pepper is usually very low during the harvesting season. Therefore, you may check the good prices from the purchasers in several places. Specially, there is lot of traders for peppers in some towns in Sri Lanka. Prices of pepper can be varied town to town and purchaser to purchaser.
