Coconut production had been increased 11.7 per cent on year on year in 2021 compared to 2022 it was 8.7 per cent these increase largely depended on favorable rain fall and air temperature in coconut growing areas.
Accordingly, production of dedicated coconut increased by 5.2 per cent (year on year) in 2021. Coconut oil production increased 59.4 per cent in 2022 due to import restriction coconut oil and farm oil. Further, I was helped by availability of additional nuts. However, compared to coconut production in India (tamilnadu, thelangana and west Bengal), Sri Lanka’s coconut production stands for 7000 nuts per acre, while regions in India have higher production than Sri Lanka. Figures depict 11400 coconuts per acre in Tamil Nadu and 10000 coconuts per acre in Talangana. In the Andra region’s coconut yield is 15000 per acre.
Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector needs modernization
Artificial intelligence, communization and drone technology are needed to adopt to agricultural sector in Sri Lanka. Although the drawbacks in Sri Lankan agriculture have been shown due to pandemic COVID 19, assistance from bilateral and multilateral partners helped to bring the sector in normal. First-time in Sri lanka, drones are used for seeding.
